Spalding is very proud to have former patient and current volunteer Jeffrey Jones affiliated with our organization. At the suggestion of one of our staff members, Jeffrey submitted his art, as seen below, to CARF. Jeffrey won the contest! Below, in his own words Jeffrey talks about his experiences at Spalding, as well as his love of art:
"After a massive stroke, I was admitted to Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital, where I started my new life as a disabled American. My inpatient rehab. at Spalding lasted 3 months and was during the Christmas holidays. There I had to learn how to walk again and how to use a left arm that was partially paralyzed. During that time I also worked with Spalding's therapeutic recreation therapist, who helped me to reconnect with art. Art was an important tool to help me recover from the brain injury I suffered through the stroke."
"I was very touched by the "best ever" care I was given. I started to volunteer at Spalding when I had recovered enough to give back."
"My art allows me to challenge my abilities and myself. I want to express love through color. I feel that this is the statement you will find in my artwork. It also says I have a big heart and that I am a book you can't judge by its cover. I entered a contest held by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) one of my art pieces was chosen from hundreds of entries to be placed in CARF's Washington D.C office. I now volunteer, work a part-time job and also sell my artwork."
